schizophrenia

Two dictionaries on my iPad give these definitions of schizophrenia:

  1. A heterogeneous psychiatric disorder characterized by psychotic behaviour including delusions, hallucinations, withdrawal from reality, and disorganized patterns of thinking and speech.
  2. A state characterized by the coexistence of contradictory or incompatible elements.

 

Etymology

1912, from German Schizophrenie, coined by Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler in 1908, through New Latin, from Greek skhizo- ‘split’, from skhizein ‘to split’, from PIE base *skei- ‘to cut, split’, and phren ‘midriff; breast; soul, mind, heart; sense, understanding, reason’, from PIE base *gʷhren- ‘to think’.
