To map the Cosmos, as an ordered Whole, we need a whole-seeing vantage point, rather like the way that astronauts returning from the Moon could see the Earth as a whole. But rather than travelling to the outermost reaches of the physical universe, we return to the Origin of the Universe, looking at the Cosmos through the eyes of God, which mystics, who are the true physicists, call the Divine Witness.

For physics derives from Greek phusis ‘birth, origin; nature, inborn quality’, from phuein ‘produce, bring forth; grow, be born’. In turn, nature derives from Latin nātus, past participle of nāscī ‘to be born’, cognate with kind and genesis.

From this Holoramic vantage point, we turn the attention inwards to map the Cosmic Psyche with Self-reflective Intelligence, creating a coherent conceptual model or self-inclusive mental image of the Totality of Existence. In other words, we include our mapmaking activities in the territory being mapped, rather like M. C. Escher’s lithograph ‘Drawing Hands’.

This reflective approach to self-inquiry is absolutely essential if we are to live our lives with full understanding of what we are doing. For our minds create our reality and govern our behaviour. So if we do not bring the un- and subconscious conditioning of our entire species into consciousness, we cannot fully understand what it truly means to be a human being.

The simple patterns underlying the Universe are then revealed, explaining why Muslims, Chinese, physicists, and artists, for instance, can build their websites using the very same tools. For the languages that all web developers use are of great generality and abstraction, enabling complexity to emerge from simplicity, from a few simple building blocks, which young children can understand.
