soothe

Soothe means ‘to quiet, calm, comfort’, deriving from archaic sooth ‘true’. The etymology of soothe indicates a terrible indictment of the English-speaking peoples in Western civilization.

First, it is extremely painful to be brought up within a culture that is obviously not based on the Truth, even denying the Hidden Harmony, as the fundamental, universal truth. As there is little prospect of being soothed with the Truth, at school, we learn what our parents and teachers want us to learn without questioning the false assumptions that underlie what is being taught, providing a comparatively easy life.

Then we comply with those who make the most noise, especially with those in authority, further losing touch with the Truth and valid scientific inquiry, including self-inquiry. As a consequence, the vast majority of the population has been led into delusion, into a false sense of contentment, often covering up great anxiety.

It is not surprising that many are in deep pain, leading to today’s chaotic world, which is a very dangerous situation, as the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists pointed out in the annual report of their famous Doomsday Clock in January 2022, leaving it at 100 seconds to midnight, having moved it there, as close as it has ever been, two years before.

They declared that we are now living at a ‘new abnormal’, because “cyber-enabled information warfare aggravates other major global dangers—including those posed by nuclear weapons and climate change—as it undermines civilization generally.” As they say, “to thrive, prosper, and advance, people … need reliable information about their world—factual information, in abundance. Today, however, chaos reigns in much of the information ecosystem on which modern civilization depends.”

To soothe the existential fears that might arise from this perilous situation, we can do no better than to go back to the PIE base of soothe, resting in our Divine Essence, which is Love, knowing the Truth that sets us free.

Etymology

Old English sōðian ‘verify, demonstrate, show to be true’, from sōð ‘true’, cognate with Swedish sann ‘true’, from PIE base *es ‘to be’. In the 1500s soothe came to mean ‘corroborate (a statement), support, uphold as truth’, even ‘maintain a lie as being true’, in order to ‘humour (a person) by expressing assent’ and ‘flatter by one’s assent’.

This social meaning was strengthened in the late seventeenth century to become ‘mollify, appease, make calm or quiet’, such as a restless person or situation, in order ‘to restore to a normally peaceful or tranquil condition’. In other words, soothing a person was the action of a ‘yes-man’.

In the 1700s, soothe became somatic as well as mental, meaning ‘reduce pain or discomfort in (a part of the body), to relieve or ease (pain)’, as with ointment.
