Harmonizing Evolutionary Convergence

Glossary menus

psychogenesis

The two principal meanings of psychogenesis in psychology and pathology today are:

  1. The origin and development of psychological processes, personality, or behaviour.
  2. Development of a disorder or illness resulting from psychological rather than physiological factors.

However, when we look at the root origins of the word, we discover that psychogenesis denotes every aspect of human creativity, enabling us to answer the most critical unanswered question in science: What is causing scientists and technologists, aided and abetted by computer technology, to drive the pace of scientific discovery and technological development at unprecedented exponential rates of acceleration?

In Panosophy, we can thus regard psychogenesis as a more appropriate term than noogenesis for the third stage in Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s four-stage model of all evolutionary processes since the most recent bang. Psychogenesis thus takes place in the psychosphere, lying between the Numinosphere and noosphere, which are described in The Four Spheres: Healing the Split between Mysticism and Science.

Through psychogenesis, evolution becomes fully conscious of itself within us humans, following the first two stages of evolution, as hylogenesis, the evolution of both small and large lumps of matter, as atoms and stars, and biogenesis, the evolution of forms of life, as cells and species, all driven by the creative power of Life emanating directly from the Divine Origin of the Universe, like a sparkling fountain.

Teilhard’s fourth stage, which he called Christogenesis, is not really evolutionary, which is a process of growth. Rather, after evolution reaches its glorious culmination at its Omega Point, inseparable from its Alpha Point, the final stage of human endeavour on Earth is an involutionary dying process, as we prepare for death in all its forms, including  Homo sapiens ‘wise human’.

Indeed, as mystics of all ages and cultures have shown during the conflict-ridden patriarchal epoch, there is no need to wait for evolution to complete its convergent, synthesizing journey to find Love and Peace. We can take the short cut to God by being liberated from attachment to the illusory world of form, including our body-mind-soul organisms in space and time.

Of course, such psychospiritual practices do not directly help us to deal with the practicalities of daily life, such as providing for our basic needs, culminating in self-actualization, in Abraham Maslow’s terms. For this to happen, evolution needs to become intelligently conscious of itself through the union of self-reflective psychogenesis and traditional forms of introspective self-inquiry .

By cocreating a nurturing space where it is safe to question the fundamental beliefs and assumptions of religion, economics, and science, we could thereby harmonize evolutionary convergence, the principal purpose of the Alliance for Mystical Pragmatics.

Etymology

Psychogenesis was coined in 1838 to mean ‘origin of the soul or mind’, from Greek psūkhē ‘soul, mind, invisible animating principle, as Life’ and genesis ‘birth, origin, creation’.
