soul

In Pansophy, soul denotes the profound essence of a structure, beneath superficial appearances, seen and felt within the Cosmic Psyche, which is inaccessible to our physical senses.

Hence, soul is not an anthropocentric concept. Indeed, as the underlying structure of the Cosmos is a multidimensional network of hierarchical relationships, the Divine Soul is Stillness, Presence, or Love, while the Cosmic Soul is Wholeness, as Totality. Unifying these two definitions, Soul is Essence.

Ultimately, even these distinctions cease to exist, as we sense the ineffable indivisibility of the Cosmos, where the experiencer disappears as an apparently separate being, as the Cosmic Identity indicates.

As in traditional esoteric teachings, humans are a microcosm of this macrocosm. In humans, soul thus denotes ‘the vital principle of our beings’, which determine our unique essential human qualities throughout our lives. These correspond to anima and psychē in Latin and Greek, respectively, manifesting as Genius and Daimon, respectively, as inner guiding spirits.

Sadly, because of the cognitive and experiential split between humanity and the Divine, opened up at least five to six thousand years ago, many humans have become separated from our Immortal Ground of Being, giving rise to the existential crisis humanity faces today, as we unknowingly accelerate towards our extinction as a species.

Etymology

Before 1121 sawle, from Old English sāwol ‘spiritual and emotional part of a person’, from Proto-Germanic *saiwalō ‘coming from or belonging to the sea’, because that was supposed to be the stopping place of the soul before birth or after death, root of German Seele, Dutch ziel, and Swedish själ, of uncertain origin, with no cognates outside Germanic.

Meaning ‘disembodied spirit of a deceased person’ is attested in Old English from 971. And from as early as 1000, soul meant ‘human individual’, as in “every living soul aboard ship”. Soul-searching ‘a profound reflection of one’s motives, convictions, attitudes, and values’ is attested from 1871.
