List of terms

anitya

Chenrezig sand mandalaThe double negative in the etymology of anitya tells us that only that which is not born is immortal and eternal. Thus everything that is born into the relativistic world of form is impermanent.

anomalous

It is a paradox that an anomalous life experience that brings universal order to the world of learning should derive from a Greek word meaning ‘uneven, unequal, irregular’, literally ‘not the same; not united’, from PIE bases meaning ‘not one, not together with’.

anomaly

In science, an anomaly is generally regarded as a phenomenon that cannot be explained in terms of the laws of science established during the past few centuries, such as unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and paranormal experiences, such as extrasensory perception (ESP).

apocalypse

The root meaning of apocalypse is ‘revelation’, literally ‘an unveiling’. John of Patmos tells us what is revealed in the final chapter of the final book of the Bible, when he affirms, “I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

architect

Etymologically, an architect is a ‘master builder’, such as architects of buildings, although they are generally more designers than constructors, creating blueprints and models for builders to work with.

art

While art often refers to a creative activity resulting in the production of paintings, drawings, or sculpture, works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power, it is much more. As we can see from the etymology of the word, we use our artistic abilities to put back together that which science has been separated through analysis.

It is through art that we bring order and harmony to the world, words that share a common PIE base.
